Key areas for beaked whales worldwide

چکیده
Beaked whales represent one of the groups large mammals about which relatively little is still known. Many beaked whale species are known from less than 50 records and only three partial skeletons. subject to bycatch by fisheries, ingestion plastics, accumulation biocontaminants adverse effects anthropogenic noise. However, inadequacy knowledge their biology means that developing effective conservation strategies can be difficult. We suggest best achieved if, in consort with other approaches, key areas for around world identified. five criteria used identify where, if human impacts were occur, they would cause concerns at a regional or global level. Using these criteria, 23 have been identified, based on existing contained database created published unpublished records. In total, covered locations almost 70% all database. identification provide useful tool it important not identified but appropriate assessment mitigation implemented within them ensure adversely affected activities.

with other cats. Finally, cats need to read and understand human behaviour better (which is where dogs have really excelled). Bradshaw argues that early socialisation and training can help achieve some of these goals, but that we should also consider selective breeding of behaviour. Controversially, the author is suggesting that widespread neutering in the UK be relaxed, arguing that the practi...
متن کاملWorldwide structure of mtDNA diversity among Cuvier's beaked whales (Ziphius cavirostris): implications for threatened populations.
We present the first description of phylogeographic structure among Cuvier's beaked whales (Ziphius cavirostris) worldwide using mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) control region sequences obtained from strandings (n = 70), incidental fisheries takes (n = 11), biopsy (n = 1), and whale-meat markets (n = 5). Over a 290-base pair fragment, 23 variable sites defined 33 unique haplotypes among the total of ...

OBJECTIVES The objective of the research thus far was to characterize the gross morphology of the blood vessels in the heads of beaked whales. Description and understanding of this architecture would be accomplished through dissection and diagnostic imaging techniques. Final products would involve peer reviewed publications of resulting data and presentation of findings are the Society for Mari...
متن کاملExtreme diving of beaked whales.
Sound-and-orientation recording tags (DTAGs) were used to study 10 beaked whales of two poorly known species, Ziphius cavirostris (Zc) and Mesoplodon densirostris (Md). Acoustic behaviour in the deep foraging dives performed by both species (Zc: 28 dives by seven individuals; Md: 16 dives by three individuals) shows that they hunt by echolocation in deep water between 222 and 1885 m, attempting...

Beaked whales (Cetacea: Ziphiidea) of the genera Ziphius and Mesoplodon are so difficult to study that they are mostly known from strandings. How these elusive toothed whales use and react to sound is of concern because they mass strand during naval sonar exercises. A new non-invasive acoustic ording tag was attached to four beaked whales(two Mesoplodon densirostris and two Ziphius cavirostris)...
